A History of Multivitamins

By: david

It is safe to say that the history of multivitamins began only in the year 1934 before which multivitamins were unheard of. However, there are no doubts that knowledge already existed pertaining to multivitamins from as far back as 1500 BC, when their health benefits came to be known.

In the year 1912 a Polish scientist named Cashmir Funk discovered multivitamins. He named nutrients obtained from rice as being vitamines, which later became abbreviated to form the word vitamin. This was how research into nutrition actually began.

Also, in the year 1920 a businessman in China noticed that there existed an important link between foods consumed and a person¡¦s overall well being. In a country where farming played a big role in the lives of its citizens, and where fresh fruits and vegetables were found growing in abundance, people that lived in the countryside enjoyed a healthier life as compared to those who lived in the cities where there was less fresh food.

After a lot of trial and tribulation this Chinese businessman created what was to become the first multivitamin in the year 1934. Of course, many improvements have been made to that early multivitamin and the future too holds great many more possibilities. As the human race becomes more knowledgeable about vitamins and different nutrients, the way that multivitamins will be used in the future will undergo still further changes and provide humans with a lot more benefits than is the case today.

At present, multivitamins are available in the hundreds, and many of them have very remarkable properties. In fact, they are outstanding in the benefits that they provide, though there are also many that don¡¦t live up to expectations.

The history of multivitamins have seen many changes from the times of that Chinese businessman who was forced to eat simple broths that lacked in nutritious value and who, due to forced circumstances, looked for alternative means to augment his meager nutrition. He soon noticed that by eating the broth along with nutritious supplements he became much healthier as compared to those who persisted with the bare broth.

He then came to the United States where he opened up his own tiny laboratory on the Balboa Island in California. In a short span of six years he conducted numerous experiments while using a variety of plants. Through these experiments he was able to develop a means of drying those plants while not losing any of their nutrients. He came up with alfalfa formulations and formulations for watercress and parsley that formed the basis of his first multivitamin product in 1934.

Today, of course you need only to go to a store where you can buy your multivitamin. Look for ones that use the Good Manufacturing Practices.
