All about contact lenses

By: Linda Barton

How much importance do you place on eye health? This may be a stupid question to put to someone considering we all know how important our eyes are. Although none of us would do anything to jeopardise our eyesight if we are not looking after our contact lenses correctly we may well be doing harm to our eyes health.

Below are some things you can do to ensure wearing your contact lenses keeps your eyes in good health and at the same time remains comfortable.

Always make sure to wash and rinse your hands before touching your contact lenses to avoid transferring any bacteria to your eyes.

Always follow any instructions that come with your contact lenses, cleaners and eye drops, get your doctor to recommend eye drops and contact lens cleaners.

The case you use for your contact lenses also needs to be taken care of. Some people overlook the fact that your should clean, rinse and dry the case each time the contact lenses are removed. Ideally you should get a new lens case at 6 month intervals.

Use eye makeup that is safe for contact lens users.

If you notice any vision changes, your eyes are more watery than usual, you have pain in your eyes, you have redness in your eyes or they feel itchy take out your lenses and contact an optometrist straight away.

Although we have discussed several things you should do in regards to contact lenses and eye health there are also several things you should avoid doing.

Avoid infections by never cleaning your contact lenses by spitting on them. Never store or rinse your lenses using home made salt water, tap water or bottled water.

Dont let creams, sprays or lotions touch your contact lenses, when using cleaning products remove your lenses and never put eyeliner on the inside of your lower eyelid.

Never wear your contact lenses for longer than an optometrist has advised you to and if using daily wear lenses make sure you dont go to sleep with them in even for a small length of time.

So what type of contact lens do you have? And what are available. Following is a brief description of the length of time each contact lens can be worn and when they need to be cleaned.

Extended wear contact lenses are left in even when sleeping for anything up to thirty days. They need to be taken out and cleaned after thirty days.

Disposable contact lenses are throw away lenses. They dont require cleaning as they are discarded after one day and a new pair is used.

Daily wear contact lenses are worn all the time. You wear them during the day but take them out when going to bed or when sleeping. They need to be cleaned and rinsed each time they are taken out or if they have not been used for a long time.
