Starting a collection can be a difficult task. There are countless options and paths to take for any collector. The key is to find something that the collector appreciates and values himself. The more valuable antiques are the ones that are not only valuable to one collector but to many. A profitable antique niche, if you can refer to it as that, is the antique map niche. Antique maps are valuable for many reasons. Their value depends on who made it, the cartographer, what period it was made in, and what region is depicted in the map. These things add value to the map, primarily due to the fact that they bring history intro play. One reason why antique maps are valuable is that they are closely related to events specific to a regions history. If an antique map is traced, if it has been authenticated properly then it is safe to assume the maps purpose, its use and consequently its current value. These things are very important for the collector, research is essential for making the acquisition of the right kind of antique map. An antique map is part of history; many maps have immense historic value. Nevertheless, the avid antique map collector should not only be interested in the historic value of the map but also in the quality of the map itself. Some maps from earlier time can clearly show a less developed skill in map making. Others, for example from the 19th century are more detailed and comprehensive. Map quality is very important as well. Furthermore, time can sometimes take its toll, and if the map has not been stored properly, its quality can be impacted. As with every other antique, the collector should pursue to find an item that has all these features in balance.
Aside from the collectors, many other individuals and institutions show interest for antique maps. Antique maps are bought by many institutions and businesses, aside from individuals, primarily due to the prestige, and decorative value such items carry. Antique maps are a part of history, and when someone wants to demonstrate their roots, antique maps are great in doing so. They can be viewed as the link between the institution and a particular geographic location. The antique map market is thriving, with many new buyers joining every year. The excitement associated with the search for finding the right antique map is immense. Antique map collectors, re-live history with every acquisition. The antique map collector, must be well aware of the history, the craft of cartography, the history of map making itself, how to maintain the maps condition as well as how, when and where to sell the map for profit down the line.
Remember that maps are a tool, and antique maps where a tool. Tools used for exploration and understanding of a world long gone. The antique map collector should be the one that wants to relive history, understand historical and world changing events and acquire a little part of history for themselves.
