Game of Skill versus Games of Chance

There have been games on the Internet for as long as there has been an Internet. Computers, generally, have always been conducive to gaming, and the advent of the online world, in the 1990s, simply added another dimension to that. Games haven’t been the same since.

Online games fall into a number of categories, and each category has its fans, adherents, hardcore players, and, yes, even detractors. Games like World of Warcraft are extensions of the old Multiple User Dungeons, or MUDs. Other games, like those found on free flash game sites, are single player, “mindless entertainment” toys. For right now though, let’s talk about games of chance, and games of skill.

Games of Skill

Using the Internet as a platform, skill based games, such as chess or bridge, are enjoying a surge in popularity. These games, with their social aspect and competitive nature, are a natural match for online chat technology, and virtual “rooms” give players the opportunity to play, learn, and talk to people with similar interests.

A skill game can loosely be defined as a game in which the players determine the outcome. Using chess as an example, a successful player must know how to distribute his forces, combine their strengths, and exploit his opponent’s openings, while thwarting his opponent’s efforts. In skill games, the player’s knowledge of the rules and regulations, and experience at playing, are essential for victory.

Games of Chance

Games of chance have also done well online. Internet based casinos do a thriving business, and have no trouble attracting customer. But what differentiates a game of chance from a game of skill?

Simply put, in a game of chance, the results are based on random factors beyond the player’s influence. Roulette is an example of this. While a player can manipulate his bets so that he breaks even, there is no way for the player to influence the results of any given spin. Other games of chance include slot machine games and bingo.

But what about Poker, or Blackjack? In these games, while the result is largely determined by luck, a player’s skill and knowledge makes a real difference. These games straddle the line between the categories.
