The musical focuses on Mama Rose, whose name has turned into a symbol of “the ultimate show business mother.” Mama Rose has a dream – she wants her daughters, June and Louise, to build their careers onstage and become big stars. The character of Louise is inspired by Lee, while the character of June is inspired by the actress June Havoc, who was Lee’s sister.

This musical is regarded as one of the highest achievements of the conventional music theatre art form of the mid-20th century. This form is known as “Book Musical.” This musical has been given the status of being one of the greatest American Musicals of all times by critics as well as writers. Out of them, Frank Rich has even stated it to be the answer of American musical theatre to ‘King Lear’!

These are some of the words of many famous critics on Gypsy Broadway musical - Clive Barnes wrote: "Gypsy is one of the best of musicals..." On the character of Rose, Barnes had this to say: "one of the few truly complex characters in the American musical...bossy, demanding, horrific…” Frank Rich has interpreted the character of Rose as “a monster.” According to Walter Kerr, though Rose is a monster, yet she deserves to be understood and liked.
