The Buffalo Bills trace their history way back to 1959 when the famous football entrepreneur Lamar Hunt decided to set up the American Football League. This, however, gave them an advantage that they could get the top draw in the AFL Draft of 1961. While the Buffalo Bills gathered the best talent that they could find, they also played the teams they could. This resulted in a situation where the Buffalo Bills became the only the team to have played a team from the Canadian Football League. They also have the distinction to be the only team to have lost to the Canadian Football League! However, those were early days in the years of the team and many things have changed since then. Among those is a winning habit the Buffalo Bills have acquired.

While the AFL was well regarded for its fast and offensive game, the Buffalo Bills, in their early years were primarily centered on defense. The Buffalo Bills went on to set a number of records in defense in their early years. They were the first AFL team to win 13 games in a single season and allowed only 4 touchdowns in the entire 1964 – 65 season. 1965 was even better. They won 17 straight games without allowing their opponents even one rushing touchdown!

The players fielded by the Buffalo Bills went on to achieve all time records. In fact, one of their players – Billy Shaw, was inducted to the NFL hall of fame without ever having played for them. The famous ESPN analyst, Paul Maguire also earned his spurs with the Buffalo Bills and Marty Schottenheimer who later went on to be a future NFL coach was also with the Buffalo Bills in his early years.

Lately, the Buffalo Bills have suffered a series of reversals. These began primarily with Tom Donahoe coming to the helm of affairs. He tended to invest in younger, emerging and little known players. This strategy did not pay off and the Bills have reverted to a more conventional strategy since his departure. Under Marv Levy, the team has begun to revive its fortunes and has started to make its way up in the charts.
