Is Buying Medications Online Or Outside the Border A Safe Option?

By: Abbey Grace Yap

The increasing prices of commodities has brought a heavy burden on senior citizens whose healthcare plans do not cover the cost of medications, more so to those who barely make enough money to make ends meet. So how can people get affordable prescription medicine to fit their budget?

Look outside the border.
Up north, Canada offers prescription medications at a relatively cheaper price compared to the same medicines sold in the United States. Very recently, a lot of American senior citizens have visited certain provinces in Canada lured by the promise of saving thousands of dollars a year in medication expenses. A survey showed that prices of the ten most prescribed drugs to senior citizens were sixty-four percent lower in Canada that in the United States. The same appears to be happening down south in Mexico. Residents of Mexico seem to be enjoying the same health care at a more affordable rate.

Log on to the World Wide Web.
Now, buying medications need not be taxing. There is no longer a need to leave the house to go to the pharmacy to buy prescription drugs because the drugstores are now working online. Not only do they entice customers by the convenience of filling prescriptions at home, it also offers big savings as their prices are lower and discounted compared to those sold in land-based pharmacies. Some Internet-based drugstores also let customer purchase drugs without prescription notes. The last feature helps people who can’t afford a consultation to get a proper prescription.

Is it safe?
With the huge number of foreign and online pharmacies coming up on the market, you can’t help but ask if it is safe to buy from them. Here are some risks when buying medicines from foreign drugstores and/or web-based pharmacies:
· Counterfeit drugs. With the blatant drug counterfeiting that has been going on for quite some time now, it is important that consumers become more aware of how to discern the real product from the fake ones.
· Drug interactions. Fake drugs may be made from lower quality materials, or be made with fillers that can start an undesirable drug interaction or trigger an allergic reaction once taken.
· Identity theft. The information you submitted in medical questionnaires over the Internet may be used by anomalous individuals to assume and use your identity to finish transactions or make credit card purchases without your knowledge.

It is understandable how people would latch on to offers that give them access to important prescription medications at lower costs, but is it really cost effective? What is a sixty-four percent price difference if it will end up affecting your health. You may be able to save more money on medication costs, but if you get victimized by counterfeit prescription drugs, you’ll end up spending more on hospitalization bills.

It is important that you think the idea of buying medications from the Internet or from foreign countries thoroughly before actually doing it. Quality and effectiveness should come first when it comes to buying prescription drugs because taking the wrong kind may lead to disaster, or worse, death.
