It Boasts a Cosmopolitan Atmosphere

By: Douglas Scott

Montego Bay is situated in Jamaica in the Caribbean Sea. It is a busy little city on the north coast.

In the past prosperity to butter, sugar and bananas but today it is tourism that keeps its pulse strong. Most visitors though, will want to explore a little of the scenery and culture of this lush land of wood and water.

A visit to the 18th century Jamaica of legend filled plantation houses like famous Rose Hall, or to the Appleton Sugar Estate thats the home of Jamaicas most famous rum. Or even to try some gentle river rafting on the Martha Brae.

It boasts a cosmopolitan atmosphere. The main resort area the hip strip lined with hotels, shops, bars and restaurants, runs alongside the beach. People are very friendly so be prepared for many offers to braid your hair or to take you to the craft markets. However, if you really do wish to shop until you drop then wander through the streets of the town centre and take your pick of the various shops, selling everything from clothes to local treats.

For a spot of fun try the Aqua Sol Theme Park. This is a golfers paradise, home to four courses, and although play is more expensive than the UK, the resort offers some very challenging fairways.

All the central beaches offer good swimming and golden sands. Stroll along and visit Doctors Cave bathing beach, famed since the 1920s for its therapeutic waters, and Cornwall beach offers a true Jamaican feel with a small bar and reggae music.

In the evenings, start the night in one of the local bars and follow with a meal in one of the many restaurants often free pick up to and from your hotel is provided.

In the evening choose from an array of bars and clubs. Margaretvilles triples up as a bar, restaurant and nightclub. Then you could always check out The Brewery and Pier One, both offering good food, drinks and music. The Coral Cliff Gaming Lounge is also a good choice and presents live entertainment whilst providing slot machines for that harmless holiday flutter.

At the end of July Montego Bay goes crazy for the Sum fest festival where reggae music will keep you partying for three days. There are also some great activities for the more adventurous, such as quad biking and water rafting. If you prefer something a bit more mysterious visit the Rose Hall Guest House which is believed, in local circles, to be haunted by Annie Palmer, the white witch.
