Keeping Dubai's Coastline Unharmed

By: AlexDubai

The developments taking place along Dubai's coastal region are inflicting a lasting ecological change in
that area. With the formidable man-made developments such as Dubai Marina, The World and The Palm Islands
being forced upon the seabed, man was bound to face the latter's backlash sooner or later. As a result,
the sea waves have begun eroding the shoreline of the Jumeirah Beach Park in the recent years. They earlier
used to flow in from the northwesterly direction but are now getting drawn in from the northeastern side.
With two hundred high-rises planned in the Dubai Marina alone - which house the Oasis Beach Tower,
Dubai hotels and many upcoming properties - it is but necessary for the authorities to keep closely watching
how the eco-system responded to the man-made alterations.

According to a recent Gulfnews report, Dubai's municipality will initiate studies on the changing sea
wave patterns and the shoreline erosion caused due to it to minimize damage. About a kilometer-long beach
line may have to be reoriented in the northeast to meet with the waves head on and thus thwart any
further erosion. According to Al Haj Al Maidour, Assistant Director General for General Project
Affairs, Dubai Municipality, no dates have been decided even as serious considerations are taking
place for the matter to be taken up as soon as possible. Dubai's shoreline is a key part of its
tourism money and its conservation is utmost necessary from any viewpoint. Various seaside landmarks like the
Oasis Beach Tower, Dubai hotels and sea resorts will lose precious clientele, if the shore ecology was not
preserved proficiently.

A new study called "Management Guidelines for Dubai Coast" has suggested the aforementioned measures,
which are to be presented by the authorities in July. The beach is 15 meters inland at the northern stretch
compared to the southern one, thus resulting into erosion for the former. The construction of a Dubai
Creek extension will also require this area being restructured. Dubai's coastline has been under duress
due to various offshore projects. Even the smaller structures like Burj Al Arab require substantial land
reclamation before being realized, thus altering the ecosystem around. Dubai's exploding real estate
scenario - which includes the Oasis Beach Tower, Dubai hotels and many other similar landmarks - can not
decide to keep evading these environmental challenges for very long.

The sheer size of the projects like The Palm Islands, The World and Dubai Marina raise the necessity of
having a mechanism, which will examine the environmental cost of these developments and suggest
corrective measures. Dubai's Municipality has handed over this responsibility to Danish Hydraulic Institute
(DHI), a leading consultancy firm, and they are expected to thoroughly examine Dubai's 70 kilometer
long shoreline. This should make the job of conservation easier for the builders' lobby and
Dubai's administration both, since many eyebrows have been raised in about the changing ecosystem.

Dubai's tourism potential grew immensely due to the landmarks it made in the last two decades. There can
be no way to stop it from putting up more landmarks like the Oasis Beach Tower, Dubai hotels such as Burj
Al Arab and an array of modern infrastructure in the years to come. Therefore, taking remedial measures was
the only way out for the administration to safeguard the city's coastline, and it may be about to achieve
that, if the recent media reports had to say anything about it.
