Kitchen Designs - Choosing Flooring to Suit Your Household

By: Rob Parker

When it comes to your home, the kitchen is one of the areas that people will pay the most attention to. In fact, most realtors agree that the kitchen style and size is one of the biggest factors when it comes to selling homes. Aside from this, most homeowners will spend a greater percentage of their time in the kitchen than in any other room, save the bedrooms.

With those facts in mind, it is no wonder that so many people want to be sure that their own kitchens look their very best. When it comes to designing a kitchen, the flooring that will be used to cover it is one of the most important decisions a person has to make. It’s not an easy decision, either; there are a few different options to choose from, with dozens of choices in terms of patterns and styles in each category. In this article, we will take a look at a few considerations that may help you to narrow down your choices.

How busy is your household?

This is probably the most important consideration when you are looking to select some flooring for your kitchen. If you have a fairly crowded house, with numerous children and even indoor pets, you might want to look at some of the more durable flooring options. This is even more significant when the ages of your children are considered; the younger they are, the more wear is going to occur on your flooring.

Busy families will also use the kitchen more frequently than smaller families, so again wear comes into the equation. The best recommendation here is to go for durable flooring that is difficult to mark, and that could mean tile or laminate. Keep in mind that tile made from hard materials is fairly unforgiving when it comes to dropped kitchenware!

What’s your household budget?

Another household consideration that will definitely come into play is budget. If you can’t afford flooring to cover everything, go for a cheaper material!

Style

You will definitely want to ensure that your flooring matches the decor of your kitchen. Again, the ideal kitchen plan will be centred around the type of family living in your home. Hardwoods are best suited for an older family, more inclined to aesthetic rather than purely practical tastes.

The flooring in your kitchen is going to be one of the main things to catch the eyes of people who come into your home. Remember that making the wrong decision when it comes to flooring could mean a downgraded appearance, and maybe even a financial hit in the event it wears out too soon!
