Making The Correct Startup Decisions

The food concession business is a rapidly growing business in the food service industry. There are many concerns that are at the forefront of the mind when someone is looking to get into this type of business. One of the most important decisions that must be made is to choose the type of equipment you are going to purchase in order to go forward with this business idea. First you need to decide on the location and food, what price you are willing to spend, then whether you are going to purchase new or used equipment.

The first things you need to decide when starting a concession business are location and type of food. For location, you must consider the laws in your area, the amount of customer traffic and what you will have to pay to be located there. You also need to decide whether or not you wish to be at a location on a permanent basis or just temporarily. This means do you want to set up on the side of the road with the owner’s permission for good or do you want to move with fairs, carnivals, or other events.

Food choice is also something that is necessary. For help with food choice, first choose something that you are familiar with preparing. Possibly draw on your heritage for assistance. Also, you need to look at what already exists in your area and whether or not potential customers will want more of the same. Another way to help you decide food type is the ease and quickness of which it is prepared. Is it something that takes forever to cook and is difficult to prepare and store? Or is it something that will be to the window in less than 2-3 minutes? These are all important things to consider before you purchase equipment because this will help you decide what type of equipment you are going to purchase.

Another thing to consider to help you figure out what type of equipment you will purchase is deciding how much money you are willing or able to spend on this business investment. If you have a set amount to spend, this can also help you with food choice possibly. For example, if you have only a small amount to spend, a few thousand dollars perhaps, your food choice will be limited by the size of your equipment, storage space, and sometimes even laws. For instance, if you purchase a hot dog cart, which is a fairly small investment compared to some, many states have laws about specific types of food that can and cannot be sold from this type of equipment. It all plays in together. The amount you have to spend on this investment may increase by taking out a loan or leasing equipment through a leasing company. This all depends on your financial responsibility, or credit.

Once you figure out your financial limitations and know what you can purchase, the next thing to consider is whether you will buy new or used equipment. This will have a major effect on what type of equipment you can buy and how much money you have to spend. In most cases, buying new is a great way to go because you can get the equipment built to your specifications, purchase a warranty, and other perks. However, this is not always the most cost efficient way to go. In fact, it is almost always not the most cost efficient way to go. Purchasing used equipment has distinct disadvantages, but there are also many great advantages. Some disadvantages include no promise of a guarantee or warrantee, not building the equipment to suit, and age bringing on wear and tear. However, a great thing about buying used is that many people looking to get out of a deal quick will sell for MUCH LOWER than the value of the equipment. And while you may think that buying used equipment is bad because the value of the equipment will drop even more, luckily most concession equipment, especially used concession trailers and used concession stands, if maintained properly hold their value extremely well. This means that if you are looking to sell and allow yourself enough time, you can often get the amount you paid for your equipment, if not more, if you got a good deal to begin with.

While there are many things to remember when purchasing concession equipment, knowing your food and location choices, financial resources, and having good credit will all lead you into a great investment whether you decide to purchase new or used concession equipment. These are very important decisions and must be considered with great care so that you get into the best deal for you.
