By: Lucien Oliveira

Map-making is an ancient activity. Evidence proves that the human being have been drawing maps in ages even before Christ. It has evolved greatly over the centuries, and we can consider map-making, or cartography, an art of its own.

Nowadays, world maps are being drawn highlighting all kinds of subjects, from history to natural beauties and sea ports maps of the world. They are adjusted to be useful according to the topic chosen, and anyone can benefit from its accuracy and cross-reference information. But the most common types of world maps are those showing the surface of the Earth with political or topographic projections.

The most generally used world maps are: world political map, which shows the political divisions of the world, i.e., countries and their capital and major cities, their land borders, and their maritime boundaries; world continent map, which only shows the seven continents - North and South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Oceania, and Antarctica, the oceans - Arctic, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and Southern, and the major seas, such as the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Caspian Sea, the Arabian Sea, the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, etc; world map on population density, which shows the current population density in every country and their major cities; and world physical map (also called world topography or geography map), featuring varied natural landforms and other topographic characteristics - there is a huge diversity, for example, plains, deserts, plateaus, canyons, mountains, highlands, valleys, rivers, lakes, glaciers, seas, gulfs, bays, underwater trenches, forests, straits, fiords, coral reefs, deltas, islands, peninsulas, capes, and promontories to be feature in this type of map.

Nevertheless, there are several maps of the world that are very helpful but not as traditional. For example, the world map on most important cities, which generally uses evaluation concepts such as city's influence on global affairs, highly advanced transportation systems, large metropolitan population, etc., to define which cities should be displayed. Also, there are maps of the world focusing on history, on natural vegetation - showing occurrence of tundra, different types of forests, grasslands, deserts, semi-deserts, and ice lands, on weather - featuring meteorological elements such as average temperature, world currents, and precipitations in a given period of time, on climate - which has a special alphabet to combine all the elements and their variations, on time zones - displaying the standard time zones and the geographical coordinates of different locations by using meridians, and on minerals - showing the availability of several minerals such as gold, silver, uranium, iron, coal, oil, copper, diamond, etc. In addition, there are even more unusual world maps such as wonders of the world map, major air routes, economic resources map, natural park map, landmarks map, and so on.

In short, there are maps of the world for virtually every need. So, next time you are studying a subject, going on a trip, researching specific elements, or even just out of curiosity, take a look at the world maps that better meet your needs and you might be surprised at its helpfulness!
