Skin Care's Big Three Products

By: Jenny Curran

Beginning with a correct skin care routine can be confusing considering all of the skin care product options, home skin care solutions and medical treatments. Depending on your situation, any number of approaches might be appropriate (each of which merits its own website at the very least). This piece is aimed at those who are just getting going with a daily skin care regimen and will focus on the three key ingredients which any skincare regimen should be built. The Big Three are skin cleanser, skin toner and moisturizers.

Cleanser

Skin care creams and lotions are available for every skin type you can think of and it's easy to get lost in this "miracle cure" or that "new life saver". One thing that will surely be required regardless of your skin's condition is that a good cleanser is a must. These skin cleaners are your initial step in treating the skin and preparing it for the next steps in your routine. Keep in mind that not all skin cleansers are created equal, especially when you consider skin type. A heavy cream cleanser is not going to be a wise choice if you have a skin type that is oily. A clay based cleanser may dry your skin out more since they can remove the skin's oil and hydration. An effective skin cleanser will clear the skin without introducing imbalances.

Toners

Toner is also known as astringent. The point of using skin toner is to wash the skin more rigorously and helping to remove dead cells, makeup and debris that couldn't be effectively removed by your cleanser. Having this important weapon in your skin care arsenal can help you avoid breakouts and open up the skin so that it is better prepared to utilize moisturizer. Something to remember however is that these products can be harsher on the skin than a cleanser. They also have the potential to make the skin dry and to irritate those who have sensitive skin. Choosing a skin care product is free from alcohol here is crucially important, especially for dry skin treatment or skin that is overly sensitive.

Using Moisturizers

The third pillar of our three prong of any skin careprogram is an effective moisturizer. The best of the skin moisturizers contain emollients, antioxidants, nutrients and oils. Similar to skin cleansers and skin toner, moisturizer should be selected based on your actual skin type. Moisturizers are usually presented by weight with the lightweight products having less oil and compounds that can feel "heavy" on the skin. As was mentioned earlier, a heavy moisturizer, which is a good choice for those with dry skin, is probably not wise to use on an oily complexion since this may simply aggravate the problem.

Those three products are a must for any good skin care treatment plan. Considering the age of your skin and whether or not you are having to manage certain skin conditions, other approaches may be necessary. If this is the case, be sure to talk with a dermatologist before applying any skin care products.
